Mbegu was just a baby when she lost everything. In May 2014, violence ignited between people and wildlife. An elephant killed a woman from a local village in Kenya and was, in turn, shot and killed.Left behind in the chaos, Mbegu was targeted by the grieving and angry community.
Mbegu's momentous moment with Lasayen and Ndotto Rescued orphan elephants Mbegu, Lasayen and Ndotto had a momentous moment in their journey back to the wild today, as they graduated from our Nairobi Nursery to the Voi Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East National Park Seed in Swahili is Mbegu. It seemed like an enchanting name for a very sweet and beautiful baby, a baby who escaped death by some miracle. Her wounds were cleaned and treated while many of the Nursery elephants sensed her arrival and began bellowing and this comforted her enormously hearing the familiar elephant sounds. This is Mbegu and this is dedicated to my dear friends who foster her.. she has grown so tall!
Yet, out of tragedy has come hope for this extraordinary elephant who recovered from her injuries at our Nursery and now leads her own little herd of dedicated followers at our Voi Reintegration Unit. Mbegu is a living, breathing reminder of the difference we can make when we take a stand of wildlife. An orphan of human-wildlife conflict, she was saved from certain death by brave individuals. Yet, out of tragedy has come hope for this extraordinary elephant who recovered from her injuries at our Nursery and now leads her own little herd of dedicated followers at our Voi Reintegration Unit.
The elephant had killed a woman in the community. Then members of that community tried to kill her in retaliation.

A local herdsman had been taking his herd to water when to his amazement he was confronted by a trapped elephant baby. How long the calf had remained submerged in the well nobody knows as there was absolutely no sign of elephants remaining in the area.
